A stranded boat, nuclear power plants, anniversaries, and more in today’s Bwoglines!
Happening in the World: 400 migrants aboard a fishing boat off the coast of southern Italy are still stranded two days after being found adrift in Maltese waters. The boat, which is believed to have set out from Libya, is one of two migrant-carrying vessels currently in the process of being assisted by the Italian coastguard. The coastguard has rescued around two thousand people so far since a number of boats arrived on Friday. Those on board have reported medical emergencies, water filling the boat, and being out of fuel to a hotline. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Friends of the Earth, an environmental group, sued Pacific Gas & Electric for seeking to extend their operating license in California. The complaint filed in San Francisco Superior Court by Friends of the Earth cites the agreement made in 2016 to close the state’s last nuclear powerplant by 2025. Pacific Gas & Electric intends to extend the operation of the plant by as much as two decades. California Governor Gavin Newsom and the state’s legislature support the longer operating run, but the cost of operation and the safety of the plant are still in question. (AP)
