If you’re a procrastinator this might be the one time you want to get it together.
Picture this. You just finished your last final. You’re excited—finally freedom at last. You rush back to your dorm, ready to take a well-deserved nap only to realize you have 24 hours to move out … and have absolutely nothing packed. Yeah, don’t let this be you.
Here is a list of 3 things not to do when packing up your dorm.
- Do not wait until the last minute. This is a no-brainer but you really are helping your future self. Pack a little bit a day to ease the burden. In addition, if you pack up earlier, you’ll know what you want to get rid of earlier, meaning that you could potentially sell your items and make a profit rather than donate them last minute.
- If you hung up posters, postcards, etc. on your wall, DO NOT TAKE THEM DOWN IN A RUSH. This is the way to ruin your wall. Instead, take your time, spreading out your work over the course of a few days if necessary.
- Do not keep clothes you are not going to wear. Please limit your emotional attachment to the cute sweater you brought from home because of the “memories.” If you’re never going to wear it again, donate it.

- Use vacuum storage bags! This will save so much space when packing up your clothes!
- Research the storage company you use. And by research, I mean research like you have never researched before. Talk to upperclassmen, read reviews, look up pictures online, call the company up, etc. This is your stuff on the line! You don’t want to come back after summer break only to have trouble getting back your belongings.
- If you have a single this year but will have a roommate next year, make sure you talk to your roommate about what exactly you will be bringing so you guys don’t double pack. Example: you do not need 2 mini fridges if you can just share.
This being said, have fun packing and good luck wrapping up finals. You go this! You’re so close to the finish line.
