Changing Order in the Middle East

  • Wednesday, September 27, 8 pm, Roone Cinema Lerner.
  • Columbia Women in Law and Politics, in conjunction with Pi Lambda Sigma and the Columbia University Muslim Students Association, are hosting a conversation with Professor Rashid Khalidi, moderated by Khalidi’s co-author Professor Lisa Anderson. The discussion will cover topics including China’s involvement in the Middle East and shifting power dynamics in the Gulf.

Challenges and Solidarity: A Dialogue on Human Rights Defenders

  • Three recipients of the 2023 Front Line Defenders Annual Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk will discuss their work and associated risks of defending human rights, and examine human rights conditions around the world.

Covering Democracy: Protests, Police, and the Press

  • Tuesday, September 26, 6 pm to 8 pm, Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice, 320E.
  • The event, co-hosted by the Knight Institute and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, will include a pre-release screening of the Knight Institute’s documentary “Flashpoint: Protests, Policing, and the Press” and focus on the Knight Institute report written by 2022-2023 Knight Institute senior visiting fellow, Joel Simon, titled “Covering Democracy: Protests, Police, and the Press.”

  • Moderated by Barnard’s President Laura Rosenbury, Professor Melissa Murray, a Frederick I. and Grace Stokes Professor of Law at NYU, and Jennifer Rosales, Vice President for Inclusion and Engaged Learning and Chief Diversity Officer at Barnard College, the discussion will examine the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision on affirmative action, as well as the implications and opportunities it presents.

Tunç Sen – Empire of Experts, Experts of Empire

  • As part of the  New York History of Science Lecture Series, Tunç Sen, Assistant Professor of History at Columbia University will answer fundamental questions about the Ottoman Empire and its “experts of the empire.”

Bulgaria & Jews during the Holocaust: Between Mythology and Reality

  • The Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies and the Harriman Institute will host Professor Rumyana Christidi in a talk about Judaism in Bulgaria. Moderated by Rebecca Kobrin, the speakers will examine questions about existing narratives, what the facts behind them are, and how historians interpret information.

  • The Harriman Institute will host a Director’s Seminar with Postdoctoral Research Scholar in Russian Politics, Anton Shiriko, about his work to understand how Vladimir Putin addresses public opinion and ensures acceptance of the war in Ukraine. The discussion will be moderated by Harriman Institute Director, Valentina Izmirlieva.
