Besides changing leaves, you can tell fall is in the air on campus and in New York City.

In New York City, there are not nearly as many changing leaves as there are in rural areas. However, there are still many aspects of city life that are trademarks of fall. Here are some ways you can still tell it is fall living in an urban environment.

Halloweekend: People dressed up in costumes and indulging in parties. Spooky season tells you it’s definitely fall.

Pumpkins: Pumpkins and everything that has pumpkins in it. This includes pies, candles, you name it. They’re in everything. Everything.

Apples: Also apples and everything that has apples in it. This includes apple pies, apple cider and so on. They’re in everything else that does not have pumpkin in it.

Coffee: There are fall-themed Starbucks drinks and fall-themed drinks at literally every other coffee shop in New York. Each coffee shop has its own fall drinks and, of course, many of them will somehow contain pumpkins or apples.

Hot chocolate: Along with coffee, hot chocolate becomes a popular beverage to drink while getting cozy in your dorm or doing work in the library. And you can probably flavor it with pumpkin or apple.

Weather: The colder air in New York smells (very slightly) less like trash than normal. You immediately feel a bitterness in the cold air, which lets you know that fall is upon us.

Darkness: It is dark by the time 5:25 pm classes end, and sometimes it feels like it gets darker earlier. Daylight savings let you know right away that the longer summer days are behind us for now.

Decorations: Fall decor. Think brown, orange, red and Halloween decor. Also, if you are a November 1st Christmas girlie, Christmas decor along with other holidays. Plus, you can decorate with pumpkins and apples.

Happier Moods: With that being said, fall ends with the holiday season and everyone is in shockingly good spirits even through finals.

Fall, has more to it than changing leaves. It has pumpkins, apples, decor and holidays. And of course, pumpkins. But, if you really want to see leaves, you can always go to one of the many parks in the city.
