Happening in the World: The franchise McDonald’s plans to buy back all of its restaurants in Israel. McDonald’s was criticized after supporting Israeli soldiers by giving away thousands of free meals, which sparked worldwide protests. These protests lead to a drop in sales in the Middle East, Indonesia and France. As a result, the franchisee has missed its first quarterly sales target in nearly 4 years. (BBC)
Happening in the US: On Friday, April 5, President Joe Biden will be visiting the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. The Baltimore bridge collapsed due to a colossal cargo ship plowing into it last week. The collapse killed 6 people and severed a major shipping and transportation artery. When President Biden arrives in Baltimore, he will take an aerial tour, learn more about the current response efforts, and meet with the victim’s families. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: On Thursday April 4, The New York Yankees announced that the start time for their Monday, April 8th, baseball game against the Miami Marlins will be pushed back to avoid playing during the solar eclipse. The game has been moved from its original start time of 2:05 pm to 6:05 pm, which is after the solar eclipse is set to take place in New York for the first time since 1925. The team also mentioned that ticket holders will be allowed to enter the stadium at 3 pm on Monday. (NBC)
Happening in Our Community: On Friday, April 5, Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies will host a day long symposium in Low Library. The symposium entitled, “Don’t Jive Me: Gender and Jazz: A Symposium,” will focus on the impact gender has on the ways we understand, discuss, perform and think about jazz. There will be roundtable panels with multiple scholars and a keynote presentation by University of California professor emerita Angela Davis. (Columbia University Events)
