KS6: Small Forward: An Evening with Belarus Free Theater
- Tuesday, October 8, 6 to 7:30 pm, International Affairs Building 1219
- Belarus Free Theater (BFT) is the only theater in Europe banned by its government on political grounds. Their newest production is KS6: Small Forward, based on the life of Belarusian international-basketball-player-turned-activist, Katsiaryna Snytsina. She will be joined by BFT co-directors, members, and the Harriman Institute’s director to discuss the intersection of art, sports, and activism.
Screening of Our Body (Notre Corps)
- Wednesday, October 9, 6:30 to 9:30 pm, East Gallery (Buell Hall)
- French documentary titan Claire Simon observes the everyday operations in the gynecology ward of a public hospital in Paris. In the process, she questions what it means to live in a woman’s body. This screening is part of the Maison Française Film Festival Fall 2024, and the film is in French with English subtitles.
Screening & Discussion. “Culture vs. War”
- Wednesday, October 9, 6:30 to 9:30 pm, Harriman Institute Atrium (International Affairs Building)
- In the second installment of the “Culture vs. War” documentary series, three documentaries will be screened, focusing on the use of Ukrainian culture as a weapon against Russia. The screening is presented by the Ukrainian Film Club.
Where Ideas Come From: Thought, Movement, and the Brain
- Thursday, October 10, 6:30 to 8 pm, Lenfest Center for the Arts
- Writer Jennifer Homans, known for her books on ballet history, and Zuckerman Institute neuroscientist Daniel Wolpert will discuss the relationship between movement and the brain. What function does dance serve in our personal and collective lives? Where did the idea to devote a decade to writing about the life and work of Balanchine come from and how did it evolve?
Sean Lee, Violin: Paganini and the Art of Improvisation
- Thursday, October 10, 7 to 8:30 pm, Teatro of the Italian Academy (1161 Amsterdam Avenue)
- Award-winning virtuoso violinist Sean Lee will perform and discuss the improvisatory genius of Niccolò Paganini’s works for solo violin. He will explore the relationship between improvisation and the classical form of Theme and Variations.
Film Screening at the Movement Lab
- Friday, October 11, 6 to 8 pm, Movement Lab (Milstein Library Lower Level)
- As part of the 2024 Moving Body — Moving Image initiative, Digital Black Dance Ecologies is hosting an experimental lab at the Movement Lab for the next two weeks. This will include two installations and a film screening. The screening will include Kankantri by Barnard Dance Professor Gabri Christa (Suriname – USA), Terra Matter (Zambia), and others.
