Happening in the World: At least 22 people were killed and 124 others injured by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. In November, both Israeli and Hezbollah forces had agreed to withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 26. On Friday, Israel’s government said that the military would not withdraw its forces by this deadline, blaming Lebanon for failing to uphold its end of the agreement. Happening in the US: A new barrage of video and photos show agents in vests emblazoned with “Police ICE” and “Homeland Security” taking cuffed suspects away. The “made-for-TV” look of these immigration sweeps is not a coincidence. At least two agencies assisting US immigration officials with the raids have told personnel to ensure their clothing clearly depicts their respective agency in case they are filmed by the media. Happening in NYC: Mayor Adams scales back his public schedule after not feeling well. “This week, the mayor will have a number of doctors’ appointments and undergo routine medical tests,” says Fabien Levy, deputy mayor for communications. Adams had already been curtailing his interactions with reporters, and his public schedule showed just one event for Monday: meeting with senior administration officials at the start of the workday.
