An executive order which would urge Congress to dismantle the Department of Education is in development.

Happening in the World: The Greek island Santorini has experienced over 300 earthquakes since Sunday. Over 9,000 people, mostly local residents, have left the island as tremors threaten the integrity of their homes. Although no major damage has been reported thus far, emergency measures and evacuations have been put in place to prevent casualties. (BBC)

Happening in the US: An executive order by President Trump to begin the process of dismantling the US Department of Education is in preparation stages. Although the President does not have the power to shut down the department entirely via executive order—a power which lies with Congress—this executive order would direct the education chief to wind down the agency and urge Congress to abolish it entirely. This move is in line with Trump’s campaign promise to close the department. (AP)

Happening in NYC: The New York City Planning Commission is considered a proposal which would rezone Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. The proposal, part of the Mayor Eric Adam’s effort to boost housing, would see 4,600 new homes constructed. If approved in today’s commission meeting, the proposal will move to the City Council for review. (Gothamist)
