Whenever the episode starts to get scary, I think about what the characters’ majors would be if they were Barnumbia students. This is what I’ve come up with.

Warning! Minor spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk.

Special Agent Dale Cooper: Philosophy

He is level-headed yet open to the mystical side of nature, and his reasoning always brings him to the correct solution. However, his logic is sometimes shady, relying on dreams and coincidences to draw his conclusions. Also, sometimes he tries to say wise things that just come off weird.

Sheriff Harry Truman: Neuroscience and Behavior

Truman takes a backseat in leading the investigation once Agent Cooper arrives in town. However, he continues to be the main authority of the police department. He’s inquisitive, scientific, and never jumps to conclusions.

Deputy Andy Brennan: Visual Arts

Andy is the artist who sketches Laura’s killer. While his intelligence is not oriented towards quantitative studies, he is quite visually gifted. Also, he makes a pretty good shot (after some practice with Agent Cooper, of course).

Lucy Moran: Sociology

She is a kind woman, focused on her work, has her fun off the clock, and is independent in her life. She has to interact with a lot of different people and make sure that the sheriff is well prepared for his work.

Ed Hurley: Women’s and Gender Studies

Although he’s in love with Norma, Ed continues to be faithful to his wife Nadine (who is insane). He respects her, participates in her delusions, and takes care of her when she can’t do it herself. Also, he helps the police investigate Laura’s death, never overstepping their boundaries while also providing vital support for the team.

Norma Jennings: American Studies

As the owner of the Double R diner, Norma is incredibly calm and acts as a mentor to Shelly. She is unproblematic, does her work, has her fun with Ed, but always understands her responsibilities. She’s probably the most norma(l) person in the whole show.

Shelly Johnson: Environmental Science

She’s not the most academically driven character on the show, but she has a good heart. She cares about others and wants to do a good job for Norma. True, she does give up a lot of autonomy by continuing to listen to the men in her life, even though she knows their ideas will not lead her to a life of wealth and prosperity. But what’s that compared to the inevitable death of the planet and all beings living on it?

Bobby Briggs: Economics

He’s a high schooler and captain of the football team, but there is not a single clip of him at school. Also, he attempts to make his girlfriend rich off of insurance money from caretaking for her not-so-vegetable, abusive husband, and she ends up having $42/month from it. He struggles with math, but he refuses to accept that he needs to focus on his studies.

James Hurley: Film and Media Studies

A soft-hearted, annoying high schooler who seems to involve himself in multiple love triangles and squares. He thinks of himself as a lover boy, but he will quickly cheat on his girl of the week for a kiss. He’s gone through major psychological trauma and has become a loner because of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if his favorite movie is Pulp Fiction

Donna Hayward: English

She is inquisitive and pays close attention to details in order to solve her best friend Laura’s murder. She won’t keep herself out of danger to do so, but never tries to draw attention to herself either. She easily socializes with adults and is dating James. She picked up smoking to look cool.

Audrey Horne: Creative Writing

She’s just a girl who’s a little crazy and very driven. She’s into Agent Cooper and has an active fantasy life, leading her to go “undercover” as a prostitute in Canada. Whenever she enters a room, she makes sure to play sultry jazz to add to her general mystique.

Benjamin Horne: Financial Economics

As the owner of the town’s hotel, Ben Horne is very financially driven. However, he will still succumb to evil methods in order to increase his wealth. (In fact, he also owns a prostitution ring and almost had sex with his daughter, Audrey, unknowingly.) This is very costly in the long run, but he doesn’t care about the long run, only making money now.

Leland Palmer: Industrial Engineering

The most evil of them all. Only fitting to have a major that leads to evil professions like quant trading. You make a LOT of money, but what do you add to humanity? Nothing. You are making money off of capital.
