It was indeed spectacular.
From the moment I took my seat, I understood why this show has been around for almost a century. I went into it completely not knowing what to expect, and honestly, I think this is the way to go.
The Rockettes have a fascinating history, and this year marks the 100th anniversary of their show. I had seen many videos of the group doing their renowned high-kicks before seeing them live on stage, but I was blown away by their athleticism and talent. Their precision, artistry, and endurance were on another level. From the moment the curtain opened and the music began, the Rockettes were there doing one high kick after another, never looking out of breath or phased by the long numbers.
After the performance, I went down a Rockettes rabbit hole and found many fun details. They perform up to 300 kicks per show and have less than 80 seconds for some costume changes. Every show, there are four “swings” who must be ready to perform at all times in case another Rockette cannot. They also rehearse six hours a day, six days a week, for six weeks leading up to the show, which explains the flawless dance numbers!
Prior to the performance, I was under the impression that the Radio City Christmas Spectacular was mainly a performance showcasing the Rockettes, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Although the Rockettes were dancing, there was also a Santa Claus, singers, dancers, and even ice skaters. During the performance, numerous Christmas classics were sung, and I felt like I was getting all of the best aspects of the Christmas spirit.
I didn’t expect to feel so immersed in the show. As cliché as it sounds, I really felt the Christmas magic for the entirety of the ninety-minute performance. From the singing to the sets all the way down to the precise detailing on the costuming, the show had something for everyone to enjoy.
About three-quarters of the way into the show, there was a reenactment of the Nativity scene. All of a sudden, extremely realistic donkeys, sheep, and camels started crossing the stage. I turned to my friend:
“How did they get those animals to look so realistic?!” I was shocked at how authentic they appeared. This show truly was on another level.
She deadpanned me. “They’re real.”
“There’s no way! How are they so well behaved?”
A quick Google search in the middle of the performance did confirm to me that the animals were, in fact, real.
Another thing I loved about the show was how it was broken up. A ninety-minute performance with no intermission can sound daunting if you have an attention span like mine, but the show was paced incredibly well. The Rockettes performed, then Santa showed up, then singers and dancers came back on, and the cycle repeated. I was exhausted just watching the performers toward the end.
If you are looking for a wholesome show to put you in the Christmas spirit, I can’t recommend the Rockettes enough. This truly felt like the quintessential New York Christmas experience.
