Who knew curling could have controversy?
Happening off-Campus: A controversy at the Winter Olympics expanded when British curler Bobby Lammie was penalized for allegedly touching a stone after release during a match against Germany. The issue had already embroiled Canada’s men’s and women’s teams, who were accused of the same violation but denied any wrongdoing despite videos circulating online. In response, World Curling increased monitoring by assigning roaming officials, though it does not use video replay. The growing dispute has intensified scrutiny over how consistently the rules are enforced. (AP)
Happening near Campus: Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced plans to add an offset bus lane on Fordham Road in the Bronx to boost bus speeds by 20%, reversing former Mayor Eric Adams’ decision to scrap a similar redesign. The goal is to increase average speeds from 9.2 to at least 11 miles per hour for the 130,000 daily riders on the corridor. Mamdani also proposed extending a protected bike lane in Fort Greene and adding new lanes in parts of Brooklyn, marking his first major transportation push. The city will continue working with the community before finalizing the plans. (Gothamist)
Happening on Campus: CU Public Safety and the Columbia Shotokan Karate Club are teaming up to offer a free self-defense class for Students, Faculty, and Staff. It will take place on February 16 at the Lenfest Center for the Arts from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Registration is required.
