Before what will almost undoubtedly be a record-breaking storm, the Lions made some history of their own this weekend as Football beat Yale for the first time since 2001. After blowing fourth quarter leads in two straight games, the Lions finally made a late-game charge of their own, coming back to beat Yale with a touchdown in the final minutes. Karma didn’t serve the Field Hockey team quite as well, as they fell in overtime to Yale after winning an overtime game of their own by the same margin over Penn just two weeks ago.
It’s doubtful that you’re really concerned with this week’s sports scores and results given that a wall of wind and water is headed our way, but regardless Bwog delivers you your weekly CU sports round-up.
Football (2-5, 1-3 Ivy League):
Results:
Yale 26-22 (W)
Overview: The Lions’ luck seemed to turn around this weekend, as they battled back from a fourth quarter deficit to upset Yale after being the victim of fourth quarter upsets two weeks in a row. Columbia got on the board first in the first quarter with a 28-yard field goal from Luke Eddy, and carried the lead into the second quarter, when Yale took the lead with a 28-yard touchdown. On Yale’s next possession, Ryan Murphy took down the Bulldog QB in the end zone for a safety. Down 7-5 at the half, the Lions fell into a deeper hole when Yale scored another touchdown in the third after a 74-yard drive. The Lions responded with a 75-yard drive of their own, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown pass from QB Sean Brackett to wide receiver Jake Wanamaker. In the fourth quarter, the Lions took the lead after a big return from Alec Fisher started the touchdown drive. The Lions made it to the red zone, and on third and goal, Brackett faked a pass and snuck into the end zone for a touchdown. Yale answered with a drive of their own, ending in a 25-yard run and a 2-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a 22-19 edge. With just over two minutes remaining and the Bulldogs in possession, the Yale QB was stripped by Mike Waller and the football was recovered by Mike Murphy, giving the Lions a shot at the come-from-behind victory that had plagued them the last two weeks. On second and goal, Brackett saw Marcorus Garrett on the left side of the end zone and delivered the pass for a touchdown and the Lions second win of the season and first over Yale since 2001.
The Lions are now tied for 6th place in the Ivy League with Brown and Yale.
Up Next: The Lions look for another W against Harvard on Saturday at 1 pm in Cambridge.

Yale 1-3 (L)
Brown 3-0 (W)
Overview: The Lions started slow against Yale on Friday, falling behind early in the first set and never getting within seven points of the Bulldogs. In the second set, however, Columbia came alive, going on an early 5-1 run with the help of three kills from senior Meghan Gaughn and closed out the set, 25-21. The Lions jumped out to early lead again in the third, ahead 10-4, before Yale slowly edged their way back into the set, tying the score at 22-22. After another tie at 24 a piece, the Bulldogs closed out the set, putting the Lions in a 1-2 hole. Up a set, Yale opened strong in the fourth, scoring first and leading the remainder of the set. Gaughn posted a double-double in the match with 22 kills and 10 digs in the loss, and teammate Colleen Brennan recorded 34 assists and 16 digs.
It was a different story against Brown on Saturday, as the Lions rolled over the Bears in the first set, taking it 25-13. Brown settled into the game in the second set, but was still no match for Columbia. Down 14-21, the Bears put together four unanswered points to get within three of the Lions, but kills from Gaughn and senior Heather Braunagel kept the Bears at Bay. The Lions closed out the second set, 25-20. In third set, the score was close throughout and was tied almost every few points. Then, with the score tied at 16-16, the Lions mounted a 9-1 run to close out the set and the match.
At 5-5, the Lions are currently tied for 4th in the Ivy League with Harvard.

Women’s Soccer (6-8-1, 2-3-1 Ivy League):
Results:
Yale 1-1 (T) (2OT)
Overview: The Lions were stunned in the opening seconds of Saturday’s match against Yale, as the Bulldogs slotted one past Grace Redmond less than a minute after the starting whistle. After the initial shock, the Lions settled into the game, putting offensive pressure on Yale early, with seven shots to Yale’s two in the first half. Even so, the Bulldogs would have doubled their score in the first half if not for senior Isabel King, who cleared a ball headed for an open goal. In the second half, the Lions finally got their break. Junior Beverly Leon, one-on-one with the keeper, found the back of the net to equalize and send the game to overtime. Despite tallying more than three times Yale’s shots, Columbia was unable to score a game-winner, tying 1-1.
The Lions are now tied for 4th place with Harvard in the Ivy League.
Up Next: Columbia finishes their 2012 season in Cambridge on Saturday as they take on Harvard at noon.

Results:
Yale 1-1 (T) (2OT)
Overview: The Lions started off strong against Yale on Saturday, with two shots in the opening minutes that put the Bulldogs on their heels. The early challenges paid off in the 14th minute, Kyle Culberston found Sauerbier up field, who then slotted the ball inside the far post to give the Lions an early advantage. Columbia held the lead through the first half and much of the second, but let the lead go in the 70th minute, when a Bulldog player chipped the Lions keeper to equalize. Sauerbier had one more chance to play hero for the Lions in the final minute of regulation, but his shot was stopped, sending the game to two scoreless periods of overtime.
The Lions are now, fittingly, tied with Yale in 5th place in the Ivy League.
Up Next: The Lions take on Adelphi at home on Wednesday at 7pm (if Sandy doesn’t wipe Baker off the map) and then head to Cambridge to take on Harvard on Saturday.

Yale 2-3 (L) (2OT)
Overview: In a frustrating and heartbreaking game against Yale on Saturday, the Lions got on the board first when Danielle Cosentino scored off a corner in the 20th minute. The Lions led for over 30 minutes of play before the Bulldogs equalized in the 55th minute and then scored again just minutes later, leaving the Lions in a 1-2 hole with time winding down. In a heroic final effort, Creaghan Peters slotted one past the Bulldogs keeper off a corner with just 28 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime. In the first period of overtime, however, the Lions bliss turned to devastation, when the Bulldogs scored and handed the Lions their third Ivy League loss.
The Lions are now tied for 3rd place in the Ivy League with Penn and Cornell.
Up Next: The Lions game against Rutgers has been postponed.

@Anonymous Lol @ the fact that no one will let alex jones cover the Bwog sports beat.
@Anon “A football spins clockwise, unlike Sandy, who spins counter clockwise.”
Um, a football only spins clockwise when thrown by a right-handed person! Left-handed people throw footballs that spin counter-clockwise.
@Van Owen my butthole juices taste different today. Perhaps basting my cornhole in the semen of others has permanently altered my colorectal chemistry? Well, lesson learned: next Halloween, I think I’ll take it easy…
