A graduate student was handcuffed and released by several individuals claiming to be federal agents last Tuesday, according to an email from Acting President Claire Shipman.

Amelia Alverson will step down as Executive Vice President (EVP) for University Development and Alumni Relations on September 15, 2025.

The Trump Administration has said that it will review the visa statuses of the 78 students arrested in the Butler Library occupation on Wednesday, May 7. 

Acting President Claire Shipman sat down for a video on Wednesday, May 7, to address the Columbia Community following the arrests made in Butler Library.

At approximately 3:15 pm on May 7, Butler 301 was occupied by Pro-Palestinian protesters, claiming to rename the library as Basel Al-Araj Popular University. Public Affairs notified the community of the protest one hour later, writing it will not be “tolerated.” Dozens of protesters were taken into custody by the NYPD starting around 7:30 pm.

Columbia Acting President Claire Shipman emailed the Columbia community on Monday to discuss “the future of higher education” and resources for international students. 

Interim president Katrina Armstrong is stepping down according to a University statement. Board of Trustees Co-Chair Claire Shipman has been appointed Acting President effective immediately.
