Prabhjot Singh, associate professor of international and public affairs at SIPA, was attacked in an incident that the NYPD is investigating as a hate crime.
According to the HuffPo, Singh—a Sikh who wears a turban—was walking along east 110th street. At 8:15 pm on Saturday night, “[a]n unknown suspect or suspects shouted anti-Muslim statements, knocked the professor down and punched him numerous times in the face.”
A group of at least 20 “young males rode up on bikes, surrounded him and started punching him,” Simran Singh said in an email, adding that the assailants shouted “Get Osama!” and “Terrorist!” Another Sikh American, who wanted to remain anonymous, was also assaulted
Singh was hospitalized with “injuries rang[ing] from a fractured jaw to bruising and swelling across his face.”
In 2012, Singh co-authored an NYT op-ed about anti-Sikh violence.

@graham butler my regards to your speedy recovery. East 110th street is spanish harlem and still a very dangerous place especially at night. while the attackers used the racial hatred, rest assured that an angry mob ready to go “wilding” will use any reason to do so….just because you feel every area in nyc at night should be safe, does not mean it is…..please do not harp on the sectarian sensativity to much….3 plus hours till midnight on saturday night in spanish harlem was more the reason….but racial divisions remain unfortunately; speedy recovery to tough up and be wise….dont let this incident make you scared or angry…all the best
@Anonymous @kinda concerned:

@Lau dad These guys are not only racist criminals, but they’re stupid because Skihs are not Muslim. Remember Vincent Chin! His killers were acquitted because they thought he was Japanese, and they were unemployed Detroit auto workers who blamed Japanese car manufactures for the loss of their jobs.
@Anonymous well this is just terrible
@Also alum This is so sad. Why were there 20 people? Was this an organized attack?
@Sad Alum See also the attack on the halal cart guy on amsterdam a little while ago.
What is going on?
@Anonymous humans being humans, unfortunately
@kinda concerned what happened?
i guess no need to identify specific cart(guy) if this isnt “news” yet, but what did you hear ? im offcampus, so i have no idea what happened
@Anonymous A halal guy was attacked a few weeks ago on about 120th if memory serves, although last I heard there hasn’t been any motive, race-based or otherwise, established yet.
@Batman@CU Lets gather in a group of 100 people and go find this group of 20 people to kick their ass! Start a shock and awe campaign!
@Irony And thus the cycle of violence continues. What fun!
@Batman@CU Sometimes violence is the best answer
@Hmm... Did you skip your Under1Roof session?
@Batman@CU Im the hero this university needs not the one it deserves

@Anonymous I send my deepest sympathies to Professor Singh. May justice and recovery be swift. Professor Singh, his family and the larger Sikh community will be in my thoughts.
@Anonymous Our hearts are with you and your family, Prof. Singh.
@Staff Hey Bwog! Would you be willing to reach out to your source and find out if there’s a place we can send flowers and cards? Or if there’s an organization Professor Singh would like people to send donations to? In the face of such violence and hate it’s so easy to feel horrified and sad and powerless. It would be great if there was some way those of us in the communtity could show our support.
@Anonymous seconded
@Margaux So sad to see that my former boss––and overall great, compassionate human being–was the victim of such a hateful crime. Wishing Prabhjot a speedy recovery!
@Anonymous It was apparently East 110th
@Anonymous This is so awful. Wishing Professor Singh a speedy recovery!
@Anonymous Sad. I wish him well.
