Whether or not you’re ready for it, Housing 2014 approaches. Lottery numbers are now up, which would probably explain why half of your floor is already crying. If you haven’t yet looked at your number, take a few moments to enjoy your blissful ignorance. Finish your reading, take a few deep breaths, and tell your friends that you love them before you descend into bickering chaos over kitchens and hardwood floors. If you have found out the number, you’re probably feeling the cold sense of dread settle into the pit of your stomach. Don’t worry—this feeling of utter helplessness is normal.
Expect a post soon that will help you interpret how dire or amazing your housing situation is. Remember, the numbers go from 1-3000. Lower is better. Higher is worse. Not every number is used, and the size of your group does not affect the number you receive. As for the point system, 10 means rising sophomore, 20 for rising juniors, 30 for rising seniors, and groups’ shared point values are averaged based on those. You can also see the full list of people who are selecting before you.

@Anonymous It probably doesn’t. Because when I input 20-3000-12, it comes up as “There are 1 groups ahead of you.”

why is columbia housing so painfully uninformative? there should be clear descriptions of the entire process on the website, not random snippets of semi-informational nonsense.

@Bobo if your online selection, does that give you a worse pick then if you are picking in person?
@Sarah Faith You’re selecting different sorts of rooms. In-person is for suite selection, and online selection is for singles not associated with suites. If people drop from in-person to online selection, their lottery number does not change.

@Sarah Faith The Furnald single cutoff last year was 10/930, but the Wien single cutoff was 10/2268. Keep in mind that two years ago, the Wien cutoff was 10/751, so it really depends on whether sophomores will try for singles this year or not.
My prediction is that slightly more than last year will try for a single after seeing the number 10/2268, and thus it will be harder to get singles as sophomores than it was last year. So, it’s possible, but not likely. If you’re in online selection already, be ready for the reality of the McBain shaft.

@How to find your number 1) Go to https://housingportal.columbia.edu/
2) Click on “Applications”
3) Select “Academic Year 14-15”
4) Click on Step 10: Registration Summary
5) Your lottery number will be on the bottom
