Columbia’s research and teaching assistants have announced majority support for a new labor union. In a press release, the union declared its objectives to be “living wages, adequate benefits, clear workload expectations, and consistent and transparent employment policies”. (GWC-UAW Local 2110)

The plans for a new Upper West Side residential high-rise include a controversial “poor door” for those living in its affordable apartments. The property’s developer insists that the poorer residents will have access to the courtyard and roof deck, so everything should be square. (Curbed)

Arkansas Governor Mark Beebe has announced his intention to pardon his son’s 2003 marijuana conviction before he leaves office. Beebe says that he isn’t treating his son any differently than he would another applicant for clemency. (AP)

A movie based on the romance of Barack and Michelle Obama is in the works, with Tika Sumpter cast to play Michelle. The field is still open for the role of Barack. (Yahoo!)

An Oklahoma high school teacher is facing termination for hanging a poster of a sexually suggestive Ben Franklin quote in his classroom. The quote, “In the dark, all cats are grey,” comes from a tongue-in-cheek letter Franklin wrote to young men seeking mistresses. (KSWO)
