Alt-Thanksgiving

They like turkey, too

Though your peers’ talk of travel plans and turkey dinners may have you in a homesick slump, there are ways for you to get your fill of Thanksgiving goodness without even going south of 110th Street.

In Lerner’s Broadway Room from 6 to 7:30 pm this evening, Bhakti Club and Columbia Students for Animal Protection will be hosting a free, vegan Thanksgiving dinner. We’re told they’ll be serving breaded seitan nuggets, BBQ baked tofu, a glazed root veggie roast, cumin mashed potatoes, vegan gravy, a carrot and golden beet salad with cilantro-mint dressing, and a pear and cranberry green salad with raspberry vinaigrette. Nomz!

For Thanksgiving Day meal options, the Office of Residential Programs has got your back. All Columbia students staying in NY for the break are invited to attend a “traditional” Thanksgiving Dinner in Wien Lounge from 4 to 5:30. The menu will feature all the classics: turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, roasted vegetables, candied yams, roasted potatoes, assorted holiday pies and beverages. If the thought of these edibles tickles your fancy, make sure to RSVP by 3 pm today. Seats are limited to 100 attendees, so be quick about it! Email Asha Bartley if the pesky Sundial calendar system gives ya any trouble.

And last, but certainly not least, SIP (of all places!) will be holding an all-day, all-night Potluck Thanksgiving event. In keeping with its six-year tradition of free turkey, they’ll be serving dinner with all the trimmings to anyone who shows up, though they do encourage food contributions of any kind.

If you’re having a free Thanksgiving event that you’d like other Columbia students to attend, let us know in the comments!

ID-Ology: Morningside Bar Trading Cards

We hear Campo has been a real shitshow (always the fresh-person word of choice to describe anything) the last few nights. Explore your other options, limited as they may be, with bar trading cards, originally posted in last year’s Orientation Blue & White. Have fun post-gaming your Intrepid party! Sip and Flex: A True Love Story

Late last night, we reported that the Hungarian Pastry Shop would soon be offering Flex.

Well, about that: It turns out that it’s actually Sip that is going to be soon accepting Flex–a fact that’s been confirmed to Bwog by Michael Novielli of Student Auxiliary and Business Services–and the Hungarian was accidentally mislabeled in our tipster’s email. We’re very sorry for the error.

Still, Sip is offering Flex! Which is arguably just as exciting as a few hours ago when you thought the Hungarian was doing so.

From the Archives: the Boot ‘n Rally rally

With Mona and Roadhouse closed down, the Morningside bar scene just got a little thinner. But there’s still stuff out there (MOST OF ALL THE WEST END [a.k.a. "Havana Central"] WHERE YOU’RE COMING FOR THE BWOG PARTY TONIGHT) and we thought it was time to re-run Addison Anderson’s gargantuan bar crawl from our Orientation 2006 coverage. Feel free to share your memories of the watering holes no longer with us.

startOn Friday night, I went on a bar-burning tour of every Columbia watering hole, roughly from south to north. I named this epic pub crawl the Boot n’ Rally Rally. Here’s how it works: I review my experience at the bar and assign a score using the facial expression I would make if you asked me, “Hey, Addison, you wanna go to [the bar in question]?” Then I give an explanatory quote that comes out of that face. These pictures were taken in order, so make a flipbook and watch me get faced. And no, I didn’t have a drink at every bar because I would have died. I’m lil’, and the doctor doesn’t tell me my weight in pounds; he says I weigh a hundred and one gumdrops and half a lollipop. Now let’s rally!

Here I am at the start of the night, with one black hoodie and negative one shower, the perfect look and smell for drinking a lot and alone. My adventures start after the jump! Read more…
