In which Bwog staff member Katie Reedy cogitates about alternative ice breakers to the traditional “two truths and a lie,” and “the name game” for Orientation Leaders and RAs, who will be faced with a group of (most likely wet), frightened, and homesick first-years tomorrow afternoon.
– Get postmodern: Bring a chisel, a block of ice, and break it.
– Best “being lost” (physically or emotionally) story, from recent memory or deep in childhood
– Best/worst hair experience (gum, cutting it yourself, etc.)
– Best cautionary tale your parents told you about New York
– Funny things your initials spell or could stand for
– Biggest irrational fear/huge misconception from childhood
– Favorite made-up word/Make up a word and a definition on the spot

@2 truths and a lie My favorite color is purple
I tried to kill myself last year
I shat myself while I was talking just now
@numanu i dont understand how this was posted at the same time when katie reedy was singing about benny and his jetts…
@even better I also enjoyed the icebreaker suggestion, but I have to say I think that going post-post-modern and just talking about getting a block of ice to break, as we’re doing here, is probably the ideal way of getting to know people.
@JJ5 make up a word –
hurack!
@let's be realistic Just buy a few gallons of cheap wine and let the ice break itself. Damn, I must be the best OL.
@everyone tries to be a badass at orientation. i was like “here are my 2 truths and a lie: my favorite color is pink, i was a high school cheerleader, and i got arrested this summer.” pause. “aha! my favorite color is RED!” and then of course i had to tell my arrest story like i was literally the word’s coolest person.
it’s ridiculous shit like that that makes the first week so amazing. and SO lame.
@DHI “Best cautionary tale your parents told you about New York ”
This would quickly escalate into who-knows-more-about-New-York one-uppery and instant hatred.
@and the scar thing? “look what more of a cool/active life I had!”
my first JJ floor meeting was like an overachiever’s ball…everyone was a band member who had trekked across south america “motorcycle diaries” style. I was like “hi, I’m from massachusetts, I like…uh…art?”
@well the scar game can get people to open up – i.e., pick a scar and tell everyone how you got it (i suppose emotional scars would be acceptable). and of course, the perenially popular link.
@Ah! It’s a secret! Bwog, of course, will leak it shortly.
@Unix Who did Columbia Concerts book for the Concert on the Steps next Saturday?
@i think breaking a block of ice would be a great icebreaker. i’m quite serious.
@i think actually, that postmodern entry was quite funny. but the rest, i still think, are eh.
@yeah our ra read out how his manual actually suggested the breaking ice thing in my freshman year. we groaned at the book and now we groan at you

@salex I groan at you, you anonymous nincompoop. I am an OL and I find them very helpful. People have gotten way too cynical and mean on the bwog lately. Submit stuff if you think that the bwog can be better.
@how do you know i don’t submit stuff?
by the way, ol’s like you are hurting orientation and your hurting america
@i think these are not very funny.
