Constantino Diaz-Duran, GS ’09, alerted us to a rally at the Egyptian Consulate (2nd Avenue between E. 58th and E. 59th) in support of Kareem Amer. Amer is a 22-year-old college student who has been imprisoned for criticizing the government in his blog. He is currently facing up to nine years in prison and is being kept in solitary confinement, and his sentence will be handed down on Thursday. Diaz-Duran can be reached at constantino@c-dd.com. The rally will take place in front of the Consulate this Wednesday at 3:30 PM. Go support free speech and make PrezBo proud.
On the same political note, the 1954 animated version of “Animal Farm” is being
screened in 1219 IAB tonight at 6:30, with an introduction by Political Science Professor Timothy Frye. No word on any upcoming screenings of the 1973 animated version of “Charlotte’s Web,” starring Debbie Reynolds and Paul Lynde.

@Constantino Thanks. I will be at the sundial tomorrow from 2:45 PM to 3:00 PM, in case anyone wants to head down to the consulate with me. If you miss me, just head down to the Consulate. We will be there from 3:30 to about 4:30. This won’t take very long. We are just trying to get more media attention to the case, and to let the Egyptian Goverment know that the world is watching.
@--- link has been fixed.
@Constantino Thank you so much for posting this.
It is very important to remember during this small and dignified event, that this is about Kareem, and not about us or what opinions we might like to express. Inflammatory statements, insults to the Egyptian president or to Islam, and so on could get him killed. We need to be respectful of his right to life and liberty.
And thank you all for anything that you can do to help this very brave young guy whose liberty and possibly life are at stake.
The link to http://www.freekareem.org isn’t working, by the way.
@Constantino PS:
Feel free to email me if you’re at Columbia and want to meet up on campus and head down to the Consulate together.

@Columbian Time and date of the rally? Unless this is supposed to be a private protest or something, if anyone reading this wants to attend, they might want to know when/where/
