@Yes, Buckley the paragon of reasonable, intellectual conservativism.
“The central question that emerges…is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas where it does not predominate numerically? The sobering answer is Yes—the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race.”
—William F. Buckley, National Review, August 24, 1957

@thanks bwog for forwarding you nytimes news alerts to my uninformed soul.
@college republican Sorry that you think we are not “worthy and genuinely conservative opponents.” Maybe you would think otherwise if you actually bothered to listen to us.
@The thing is Buckley’s arguments weren’t too sound. He just made them with passion and conviction.
@m b This is awful news…he will be missed.
For those interested, here’s an interesting column he wrote a few weeks ago about Obama, everyone’s favorite messiah:

@Sad Very sad.
@this is a sad fay for America.
@err day*
@Sad It is such a sad day for America :( Our economy is in shambles, one of a diminishing number of old-school intellectuals has died, we elect mediocre officials, we’re wasting money on the Arab World (Iraq, Jordan and Egypt), we award only non-American actors and the filthy EU is sticking its harpoons in us by fining Microsoft for billions.
@meh Kind of sad actually. He was an intelligent man and actually supported substantial reasonable debate unlike the demagogues of the left and right today.
@um.. does bwog actually know anything about buckley?
Firing Line back in the day was a very contentious show reminiscent of fox news shows…his tiffs with gore vidal are also extremely pointed and memorable.
Buckley was smart, but he wasn’t the one humble, ‘genuinely conservative’ that fit the acceptable standard of somebody who was allowed to oppose liberal movements. He was intelligent, articulate and passionate and probably would have been viewed as a hannity or ingraham or something (probably smarter than those two) by peers from his day.
@Chris Kulawik This is a sad day for me.
