Bwog has just received word that President-elect Barack Obama has tapped a former Columbian Eric Holder, CC ’73 and J.D. ’76, to fill the shoes of yet another illustrious Columbia alum Michael Mukasey, CC ’63, as the next Attorney General of the United States.
You might remember Holder for his brief stint as acting Attorney General between January 20, 2001 and February 2, 2001 while the Senate delayed its confirmation of the controversial John Ashcroft, or perhaps even better for his more famous position as Deputy Attorney General in the Clinton administration from 1997 to early 2001 where he was at the center of the firestorm surrounding the controversial pardon of financier Mark Rich. You may even have noticed he’s a University Trustee.
While Holder remains to be vetted by the Obama administration and confirmed by the Senate, he looks to be the first African-American head of the Justice Department. Bwog sends Mr. Holder its congratulations, and hopes for several more Columbians in the cabinet!

@oh boy Successful troll is successful.
@nat'l security advsr i’m pulling for richard k. betts!
@bobf Coincidentally,Columbia University Trustee Holder’s law firm represented the Superior Bank’s holding company on whose board sat the Obama campaign’s national finance chair, Penny Pritzker– after Superior Bank failed in 2001 because it engaged in subprime mortgage lending. @DHI So some people worked for big law firms, and those big law firms took big cases? Astounding.
Holder’s gonna do a great job. Very smart guy, very dedicated.
@yeah...no you can read pat buchanan for the both of us.
@read Read Pat Buchanan’s Death of the West to realize why this is scary.
@so you're saying it’s actually a good pick.
@Where were you? Where were YOU for the past 8 years? You want to talk about the Death of the West NOW?
Listen, buddy. 4,182 troops killed in Iraq. 621 troops killed in Afghanistan. 33,355 wounded in action. A huge national and increasingly international financial crisis…
And you want to link any of “this” (a black president, a potentially black attorney general) in any way, shape, or form to the “Death of the West?”
To Buchanan’s defense, he’s a pretty big isolationist and critic of Bush’s foreign policy. So without criticizing his racist domestic norms, why are YOU only voicing your fear now?
I don’t think I have to read Buchanan’s book to realize why I’m scared. I just have to look around. I suggest you do the same.
@Lattimore I’m no fan of Buchanan, but your perspective is unbelievably skewed. 4,000 dead troops, though a tragedy, is utterly insignificant in the grand scheme of things. To even imply that it somehow signals the “Death of the West” is absurd. Just look at WWII — almost 500,000 men died at the battle of Stalingrad alone. Furthermore, this isn’t America’s first, or worst, financial crisis. Yes, it’s bad now, but at least we don’t have gas lines like we did under Carter.
Also, I don’t doubt that Buchanan’s work carries racial undertones, which I find disgusting. But if you were a conservative, like me, then you’d also find the prospect of more big-government and high-tax Democrats in positions of power absolutely terrifying, especially now. I just don’t think borderline socialism like they have in Europe is an American value. Of course, none of this absolves the current Republicans of their corruption and stupidity. Sorry for the rant, lol.
@LOLtoolz “o no! black commiez are killin my valyoozz!”
@Lattimore Are an utter idiot. Learn to read.
@Lattimore x2 You*
@well people like you scare me. Stop making Economics into an issue about values. If empirical evidence emerges conclusively suggesting that government spending and a higher tax on the upper strata of society promotes job creation and low inflation, I don’t want ideologues like you getting in the way of progress.
@Maybe I should have been more specific. Those 4,182 soldiers died for a war that should never have been waged (and even Buchanan agrees). THAT is a tragedy.
Second, the approximate $600,000,000,000 spent on the war, its relationship with the current recession, and the opportunity cost of infrastructure development have served as a greater threat to the United States than your high-tax Democrats ever could. I know that you mention the Republicans’ “stupidity and corruption” in the last line, but if you want to make charges regarding the “Death of the West,” let’s remember who’s been the executioner for the past 8 years.
Lastly, the war in Iraq has helped transform Al Qaeda into a more unconventional, networked, widespread terror organization. (If you think that’s some sort of liberal propaganda, read some of the biggest terrorist experts like Hoffman who have spent their academic lives trying to understand terrorism in order to better combat it.)
I repeat my question: You want to talk about the Death of the West? Where were you for the past 8 years?
@despite the Marc Rich stuff–this is a good pick
Holder was one of more intelligent and reasonable picks out of the names being mentioned.
@CC is the shit! First Black President
First Black NY Governor
First Black Attorney General?
