The football team’s huge victory yesterday over Princeton was a new high for the program, but, unfortunately, it was also far-and-away the brightest spot in the weekend for Columbia athletics. Both the volleyball and field hockey teams were overwhelmed in their matches: a 3-0 loss to Cornell for the volleyball team and a 4-0 loss at Princeton for field hockey. The soccer teams both experienced tough losses as well, with women falling 1-0 to Brown despite controlling the match, and a overtime goal sending the men to a 2-1 defeat to nationally ranked Brown, despite playing most of the match down a man. Even the rowing teams (in their short fall season) had a tough time, with both the men’s and women’s boats finishing 4th at the Poughkeepsie Regatta.

The other good result from the weekend was the cross country team, which finished 2nd on the men’s side and 3rd on the women’s side in the George Mason Invitational.  Junior Brendan Martin finished fourth individually for the Lions on the men’s side, while first-year senior Irena Ossola led the women with a 10th placed finish. Still, at least we now know the karmic cost for a good football team.
