30 CommentsToday, the University issued an update on the situation in Haiti, confirming that six SIPA students and one SIPA faculty member are on their way back to New York after being safely transferred to the Dominican Republic yesterday from Haiti. Two CIESIN (the Center for International Earth Science Information Network) faculty made it back to the U.S last night, and one Journalism student was flown to the Dominican Republic this afternoon. Government agencies have informed the University that the best way to help in the short term is through cash donations to organizations already operating in Haiti.
The news brief has additional information about how to locate family members in Haiti, and a short list of organizations accepting donations.

But some people are all, “What about the strain on our resources?” Well it’s like when I had this garden party for my father’s birthday, right? I put R.S.V.P. ’cause it was a sit-down dinner. But some people came that, like, did not R.S.V.P. I was like totally buggin’. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, and squish in extra place settings. But by the end of the day it was, like, the more the merrier. And so if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty.

@Stick to... … the topic. Helping others is the right thing to do. Right wing, left wing, who cares? George W. Bush and Bill Clinton released a PSA filmed together asking Americans to help those in Haiti. Save the political jabs and politics for an appropriate post.
It doesn’t matter who is in office at the time of a disaster, America helps those in need. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t George W. Bush pledge $350 million to aid with the tsunami?

@ok Obama pledged 100 million dollars…Uhm couldn’t that be used for something else…maybe to help the economy or create new jobs…I can’t believe there are still people out there who blindly believe in everything the president does…WAKE UP
@... well some people believe that you should help those less fortunate than you regardless of your status. One of the things I find really great about America is that it can be quite generous when it comes to helping nations in disaster zones.
(History buffs, don’t jump me. I know there are lots of examples to the contrary. Just saying…)
@not to feed the trolls, but ... Honestly? $100 million to save thousands of lives? That’s a massive amount of money for Haiti, but a drop in the bucket for us. We can spare it – and more importantly, as fellow human beings, we should spare it. It’s the right thing to do.
We have infrastructure that provides food, shelter and medical care for the jobless. Our infrastructure is often far less than ideal, but it functions.
Haiti has nothing. There is no infrastructure left, and most of the government has perished. People there are dying from massive injuries, from not having clean water, and you are worried about providing a handful of jobs (at best), for people who already have food, shelter and clean water? There’s no comparison. This is in no measurable way going to slow down our efforts to improve the American economy, and it’s extraordinarily selfish of you to try to pretend otherwise.

@HarmDwell Yeah, Obama pledged 100 million dollars, not including the 1000 troops we mobilized down there. That’s really not much for us. Thats 1.5% of their GDP and .0007 of ours. I think we’ll be ok.
