Today, the University issued an update on the situation in Haiti, confirming that six SIPA students and one SIPA faculty member are on their way back to New York after being safely transferred to the Dominican Republic yesterday from Haiti. Two CIESIN (the Center for International Earth Science Information Network) faculty made it back to the U.S last night, and one Journalism student was flown to the Dominican Republic this afternoon. Government agencies have informed the University that the best way to help in the short term is through cash donations to organizations already operating in Haiti.
The news brief has additional information about how to locate family members in Haiti, and a short list of organizations accepting donations.

@Re: helping haiti The Haitians need to come to America. But some people are all, “What about the strain on our resources?” Well it’s like when I had this garden party for my father’s birthday, right? I put R.S.V.P. ’cause it was a sit-down dinner. But some people came that, like, did not R.S.V.P. I was like totally buggin’. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, and squish in extra place settings. But by the end of the day it was, like, the more the merrier. And so if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty.
@some people try way to hard to be funny:
“A cheeseburger shop run by cruel and petty dictators. Columbia felt it was the right fit.”
hahaha….not
@that's not as bad as not knowing how to spell.
@the above: ” true, but soon they will crawl back under their rock until they can come up with another way to try to provoke reasonable people. Maybe they can try and outdo themselves and get Pat Robertson to appear on campus.”
proves the point that all liberals do is simply insult conservatives when they have no viable argument to make
@What's What’s maoz? Some commie joint?
@Anonymous A cheeseburger shop run by cruel and petty dictators. Columbia felt it was the right fit.
@yo bwog lolwut? no it sells falafel
@Anonymous i wish we could get a SUBWAY sandwich shop with the $5 footlong deals instead.. we desperately need a SUBWAY
@especially when she lies to you all the time, and you just want love.
@yo bwog maoz is coming to columbia! where empanada joe’s once was! please investigate! finally a falafel place better than amirs! i can’t wait to go! i hope it opens before i graduate!
@looks like the whole college repubs is in the house today.
@Progressive soul … true, but soon they will crawl back under their rock until they can come up with another way to try to provoke reasonable people. Maybe they can try and outdo themselves and get Pat Robertson to appear on campus.
@WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!
@the above is a typical liberal who just insults the right wing…
how bout you let your party’s actions speak for themselves
Oh wait…the president you elected ran on a platform of change, change that clearly hasn’t manifested itself yet
@Stick to... … the topic. Helping others is the right thing to do. Right wing, left wing, who cares? George W. Bush and Bill Clinton released a PSA filmed together asking Americans to help those in Haiti. Save the political jabs and politics for an appropriate post.
It doesn’t matter who is in office at the time of a disaster, America helps those in need. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t George W. Bush pledge $350 million to aid with the tsunami?
@CU'er sorry to disappoint you, but i am not and never was a democrat.
@CU'er hehe, still on break, and replied to the wrong posting… in any event: you need to know that there are people who you are not able to categorize into your neat little package of politics. i am not, and never have been, a Democrat.
@Please, please tell me that these people are joking?
@CU'er Unfortunately, it seems that the American right has descended deep into the politics of zani-ness, so it is likely that some of the voices here are not joking. American conservatives have abandoned rational political discourse in favor of obstructionism and mud-slinging.
So, let Ms. Palin spew her bizarre-ness on Fox and hope that the rest of them will just continue to paint themselves into their self-made corner of irrelevance and marginality.
@ok Obama pledged 100 million dollars…Uhm couldn’t that be used for something else…maybe to help the economy or create new jobs…I can’t believe there are still people out there who blindly believe in everything the president does…WAKE UP
@... well some people believe that you should help those less fortunate than you regardless of your status. One of the things I find really great about America is that it can be quite generous when it comes to helping nations in disaster zones.
(History buffs, don’t jump me. I know there are lots of examples to the contrary. Just saying…)
@not to feed the trolls, but ... Honestly? $100 million to save thousands of lives? That’s a massive amount of money for Haiti, but a drop in the bucket for us. We can spare it – and more importantly, as fellow human beings, we should spare it. It’s the right thing to do.
We have infrastructure that provides food, shelter and medical care for the jobless. Our infrastructure is often far less than ideal, but it functions.
Haiti has nothing. There is no infrastructure left, and most of the government has perished. People there are dying from massive injuries, from not having clean water, and you are worried about providing a handful of jobs (at best), for people who already have food, shelter and clean water? There’s no comparison. This is in no measurable way going to slow down our efforts to improve the American economy, and it’s extraordinarily selfish of you to try to pretend otherwise.
@If your neighbor’s house is on fire, you don’t haggle over the price of your garden hose.
@HarmDwell Yeah, Obama pledged 100 million dollars, not including the 1000 troops we mobilized down there. That’s really not much for us. Thats 1.5% of their GDP and .0007 of ours. I think we’ll be ok.
@why why are we spending so much on relieving those hurt by the earthquake when we have thousands of problems in our own nation that our president has exacerbated??
@i didn't know glenn beck reads bwog!
@Anonymous because they need a LOT more help. you clearly have no idea how poor the people over there are and how rich the US is in comparison. plus, who said the US is spending that much?
@reasonable human being it’s easy: because Haiti made a pact with the devil. didn’t you pay attention to the “rev.” pat (senile) robertson?
@Anonymous problems that our CURRENT president has exarcebated? you must be on crack. let me revise it for you..
“why are we spending so much on relieving those hurt by the earthquake when we have thousands of problems in our own CITY that our MAYOR has CREATED??”
