Guide to the Weekend: Cheap Tricks

Written by

Here we meet again on a Thursday night just bustling with excuses as to why there’s no use taking our chances south of Cardomat.  Thankfully, INY has pulled through again with a mixed bag of cheap tricks around NYC.  Take a look at Bwog’s top picks here or check out insidenewyork.com for an epic selection of weekend escapes.

Nuthin but a “DRE” Thang

Still D.R.E.? Well then hightail your Hunter boots down to Music Hall of Williamsburg for Dr. Dre’s 45th birthday and the 3rd annual celebration of his hip-hop legacy. While Dre can only send his love, expect intoxicating performances by Nick Hook, Egg Foo Young, and Project Matt.

WHEN: Thursday, February 19th @ 10pm

WHERE: Music Hall of Williamsburg, 66 North 6th Street, Brooklyn

Subway: L to Bedford Ave

PRICE: $10

Blackout with UCB

Join Jon Gabrus, acclaimed writer of The Spike Video Game Awards, and his UCB droids for a blended debauchery of standup and swigging. Drinks will be poured by Gabrus’ top pick bartender, and those tattered UCB chairs will be shared by a few special guests.  21+

WHEN: Friday, February 19th @ 11pm.

WHERE: Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, 307 W. 26th Street (at 8th Ave)

More! More!

Drumline Downtown

Catch NYU’s Steinhardt Classical Percussion crew and the Percussive Arts Society for a full weekend of back-to-back performances at Frederick Loewe Theater. With performances by rhythmic gods such as Blue Man Group, you’ll have the opportunity to shake off the heartache from last weekend’s bad romance.

WHEN: Starts Friday, February 19 @ 7pm, all day Saturday and Sunday

WHERE: NYU Frederick Loewe Theater, 35 West Fourth St (near Greene St)

COST: Free (Arrive 30 minutes before to get an admission pass to all events!)

Knock the snookies off their feet at the Jersey Shore Dance Party with your hawttest costume ideas. Lower your standards and remake yourself into your favorite Joisey shore personality for deafening techno beats and cheap drinks. 21+

WHEN: Sunday, February 21 @ 12am

WHERE: Union Hall, 702 Union St. (at Fifth Ave), Park Slope, Brooklyn

After doing your “DRE Thang” Thursday night, make sure to pay your respects to GW by learning and performing 18th century country moves and touring the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum to prove Columbia as more than a bunch of future expats.  No guarantees, but it makes for more of a story than scanning the Reference Room on a Sunday Afternoon.

WHEN: Sunday, February 21st @ 1pm

WHERE: Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden, 421 East 61st Street

Subway: N,W,R,4,5,6 to 59th St./Lexington Ave.
