Look! There’s dancing! Why? Because the headliner, Cold Cave, is a pop band who have been called “one to watch” by many many “mainstream” blogs.
Also, I have a super mellow jazz and folk show on WBAR and I helped book this event… WBAR caters to many many ears, and our shows really do run the gamut from free jazz to hip hop to regular old pop. We didn’t want to book extremely well-known, major label bands because we hoped that everyone would discover something new after attending the event, and from what I could tell by the many in attendance throughout the day, everyone who stayed did like the music. That’s why they stayed, danced, and hung out all day.
Sure, the bands we asked to play were sometimes more challenging than the latest “indie” band to hit the scene, but that was the intention– why would you come to an event put on by an independent radio station and want to hear the same old stuff? Also, whoever is posting mean comments obviously doesn’t care enough to make the commitment to have a radio show every week, so if you really care that much, get a show next semester and play whatever you want. WBAR is the largest Barnard campus group for a reason!
