The show must go on! The gloomy weather may have forced the event from its original location at Lehman Lawn, but today’s WBAR-B-Q was not to be canceled. Here are some photos from the über-mellow, free food-filled hipstery musical experience in Barnard’s LeFrak Gymnasium.

@Jennie You go Lara! First, BWOG, why did you post only sad photos? Here are some way better ones that show how fun the event really was: http://www.imposemagazine.com/photos/wbar-b-q-with-cold-cave-blues-c
Look! There’s dancing! Why? Because the headliner, Cold Cave, is a pop band who have been called “one to watch” by many many “mainstream” blogs.
Also, I have a super mellow jazz and folk show on WBAR and I helped book this event… WBAR caters to many many ears, and our shows really do run the gamut from free jazz to hip hop to regular old pop. We didn’t want to book extremely well-known, major label bands because we hoped that everyone would discover something new after attending the event, and from what I could tell by the many in attendance throughout the day, everyone who stayed did like the music. That’s why they stayed, danced, and hung out all day.
Sure, the bands we asked to play were sometimes more challenging than the latest “indie” band to hit the scene, but that was the intention– why would you come to an event put on by an independent radio station and want to hear the same old stuff? Also, whoever is posting mean comments obviously doesn’t care enough to make the commitment to have a radio show every week, so if you really care that much, get a show next semester and play whatever you want. WBAR is the largest Barnard campus group for a reason!
@Old Man WORD
@Anonymous DOUBLE WORD. Well said Jennie!
@Lara Schilling i dont understand why so many people on this thread feel the need to put things like the wbar-b-q and wbar’s choice of artists in such a confining and barbed package. the aim of wbar and the aim of the musicians (taking a certain liberty in speaking for them i suppose) is not to create an insular world for themselves that is intentionally hostile or alienating to others but to create spaces for and ignite interest in the performance of new and innovative music. “hipsterdom” is frankly a meaningless term that seems to have been created by people with an overwrought drive to reinforce the dominance of their world view by relegating other music, art, and lifestyle scenes to a homogeneous space simply labeled “hipster”. the musical acts at the wbar-b-q were incredibly disparate; blanketing them all under the labels “crap”, “screechy music” and “drone of a dying dinosaur mixed with a gregorian chant on a bad acid trip” (go you, you successfully pastiched 3 obscure cliches together) only displays a truly embarrassing level of ignorance. open your ears, columbians, there is a lot more out there than even you can imagine.
@holly s amen
@Anonymous Little known fact: WBAR booked Animal Collective in 2003, when they were too “weird” to be listened to by people who were cheering for Of Montreal yesterday. When Cold Cave ends up on the Bacchanal line up in like…5 years, remember that WBAR had them play first.
WBAR is a freeform radio station. Any student can apply for a show and play whatever music they like. Anyone can apply to be on executive staff and decide line ups like the Wbarbq. Lots of people came to the event and had a good time, enjoyed the music, ate some cotton candy etc. If you didn’t that’s fine too but there is no need for the vitriol.
@YES amen!
@Anonymous well said
@False. I don’t care what anyone says, the crap that was being blared in LeFrak was not, and will never be, music. It was not something you could even beat your head or tap your foot to. It was literally like listening to the drone of a dying dinosaur mixed with a gregorian chant on a bad acid trip.
That being said, I quite enjoyed the free temporary tattoos. I now have a giant purple spider on my left ass cheek.
@Anonymous And what is music to you? Is free jazz (“academic,” serious music right?) not music because you can’t beat your head or tap your foot to it? Your definition is pretty limited. Enjoy your temporary ass tattoo.
@False. Oh, you’re one of THOSE people. Those people who think that a canvas painted white or a pile of garbage is edgy art. Sorry, let me rephrase myself: I guess I can’t put music in a box, but I’ll say this: free jazz doesn’t make my ears hurt, and the noise pollution coming from LeFrak did.
And I WILL enjoy my ass tattoo, thankyouverymuch.
@Anonymous Did you even bother to find out the name of the “noise pollution” bands you hated?
WBAR is a group run by students who choose to be a part of the station. It isn’t Bacchanal. If you stuck around for the day, you would have seen different kinds of groups and (shocker!) people enjoying those groups. Whoa!
@Hey WBAR: Way to go. You just lost potential listeners because you wanted to be hip/indie/whatever and have the most obscure, weird bands play. You didn’t have to book Wiz Khalifa or Animal Collective, just something that people could listen to without cringing.
@Anonymous Way to only post the saddest photos you could find of the event, great reporting once again Bwog.
@sorry sorry WBAR couldn’t book FUKKIN ANIMAL COLLECTIVE for you dawg :(
@yeah man WBAR totally should have booked more WIZ KHALIFA, he is the best records
@Anonymous i just discovered this band GRIZZLY BEAR wbar totes should have gotten them to play!
@Anonymous the bands blew. wbar has shit taste
@Anonymous the poor attendance is probably due to the facts that this even is on a sunday (?) and because sitting in a gym all day is really unappealing.
@agreed I went one year when it was on the lawn and it was fun and chill. Have a picnic, lie on the grass, listen to music (even though I didn’t know any of the bands). but when I heard this one was in the gym I didn’t even bother. lame, but I guess they had no choice given the weather.
@Anonymous what was with all the screechy music and public safety at the doosr?
