Citing “financial constraints,” AHinks just notified the Barnard community via email that their physical education requirement has been reduced from two semesters to one. Students can still take two semesters for credit, but why would anybody do something they didn’t have to?

Subject: Change in PE Requirement
Dear Students,
We are writing to inform you of a recent change in the academic curriculum. On Monday, April 2, a motion was passed by the Barnard faculty to reduce the Physical Education requirement from two semesters to one semester. All students who have completed one semester of Physical Education have therefore fulfilled this degree requirement. Students who have completed the requirement have the option of taking a second P.E. course for one additional credit, but they will no longer be required to do so. All students who have not yet taken P.E. will be required to take one course before graduating. (As always, dance technique classes will count for the P.E. requirement.) Students are still required to fulfill the 122 credit graduation requirement (121 for transfers).
While this change is largely motivated by the financial constraints under which the college is currently operating, we fully intend to maintain Barnard’s deep-seated commitment to our students’ physical fitness and well-being. We anticipate that students will continue to take advantage of our Well-Woman and FITbear programs on campus, and we look forward to working with you to consider other ways in which we might encourage all members of our community to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles.
Respectfully,
Paul E. Hertz
Acting Provost and Dean of the Faculty
Avis E Hinkson
Dean of the College

@Anonymous Who gives a shit, if we still want to take one, we can take one. Honestly my PE class is a waste of time. I’m not fat, it is just something I could easily do on my own.
@So Columbia feel free to follow suit tomorrow. I don’t wanna go to the last two weeks of PE.
@Anonymous SGA has posted a response to their website about the recent e-mail from the administration. I highly suggest everyone read it to understand where this decision came from and how it was made! You can find it on the SGA website at http://www.barnard.edu/sga or at the following link:

@Anonymous Does this mean more fat Barnyard girls?
@Anonymous Yes.
@Wow dick
@Anonymous True. Dick is also a good way to get exercise.
@Sweet Less PE requirements means more time for CU guys, which means more exercise
@dat tag So true.
@Why anyone would do something... ..they didn’t have to:
It could still help you do something you need to do. 122 credits are required to graduate, and 2 of them can still be PE.
I personally think this is a really sad change. I would never have taken PE or dance courses if not required to, just like I probably never would have taken courses in philosophy or sociology if not to fulfill the 9 ways of knowing. Both semesters really helped me think about my body and movement and all that in new ways: they were integral parts of my education. I get that money is tight (why are we talking about a new library?!), and this is just a very sad reflection of that.
I hope that people still consider fitting in 2 semesters of PE or dance even though it isn’t required. There are GREAT instructors here, and you shouldn’t assume it’s a waste of time to use your whole body to learn things!
@Anonymous i agree… what you can learn using your whole body is definitely underrated. especially at Columbia;)
@Anonymous Now if only Columbia can follow suit…
