Congratulations to the 2%! The Class of 2013 Junior Phi Beta Kappa members have just been announced by the College, with the remaining 8% of really smart people to be inducted in the spring. According to the CC website announcement, the country’s oldest academic honor society was founded for the pursuit of “friendship, morality, and literature,” but that has since then boiled down to coveted lists of people and PB&J jokes on Bwog’s part. But seriously, congratulations to the following 22 students:
- Travis Baseler
- Jason Bell
- Tyler Benedict
- Caitlin Brown
- Woo Chang Chung
- Peter Conroy
- Kevin Crowley
- Hannah Deresiewicz
- Joel Dierbeck
- Frederic Dulson
- Leah Friedman
- Matthew Gladstone
- Cynthia Harris
- Yuxiao Huang
- Samuel Kohn
- Gavin McGown
- Gerard Ramm
- Billy Rees
- Rotem Rusak
- Matthew Salant
- Katharina Shaw
- James Wiseman

@Fuck Yeah Kevin Crowley!
@mariaappreciater The venerable woo is probably the smartest guy in our year, and I personally find him quite attractive. Whoever mocked his name is a jackass.
@need to know matt salant? straight?
@Taylor Swift As an arrow
@anon Right? Languages are SOOO hard! Good luck with that degree.
@yo chill
@burp frederic dulson rocks my world!
@Woo Chang Chung? What a stupid name
@Gonna say it... How about Barnard? GS?
@BC Barnard is getting announced separately, I know of at least 3 Barnard students who got picked for it. I don’t know about GS, but I’m sure they’ll be announced soon as well :)
@wait really? tyler benedict? the orgo night guy? REALLY???
@Yes, really. @wait: Do you even know Tyler? He’s one of the smartest people on campus. Check your shock, bro.
@Yes, “the orgo night guy”. Guess what!?!? He’s actually a really sweet and intelligent guy on top of being hilarious. Whoda thunk it?
@Paul Meow.
@Anonymous So smart. So nice. You are the best, Hannah!
@CC'14 Is there something wrong with me for seeing this and being incredibly disheartened by the likelihood of my never receiving PBK?
@CC '14 Bueller? Anyone? No pep talk on how life is long and winding and just because you can’t afford the toll on some roads doesn’t mean you won’t get to the same place along a different path? Nope? Well alright then.
@Anonymous so, so proud of you Hannah!! YOU ROCK
@Anonymous luv ewe gerald
@some of the people on this list are huge assholes
@Anonymous but not all of them!
@Anonymous Also… a surprisingly low number of women, it seems. (I realize not everyone on that list identifies explicitly.)
@Anonymous Don’t know how much GPA factors in, but the very best science majors tend to have higher GPAs than the very best humanities majors (aren’t a lot of A+’s in an English course but if five kids in physics get nothing wrong the entire semester you can’t not give it to them). For whatever reason, there’s still a big gender discrepancy in the hard sciences, so that may be part of it.
@Anonymous @Anonymous: well the very best science majors are way smarter than the very best humanities majors. true story.
@I know it's not there anymore but gerald, gerald, Gerald, Gerald, GERALD! GERALD!! GERALD!!!
@CC13JJ11 J HOOOOOOOODDDDDDD!!!!!!!!

@yeah! you go, caitlin!
@nitpicky i see two asians!
@troll There are actually three…
@dang all white people + one asian… says something about the academic caliberof minorities here…
@Anonymous they should rename the list to “people with the most privilege”
@Hold up, hon. Some identities, including and especially non-privileged identities, are not (immediately) visible.
@Person @Hold up, hon.:
Joel Dierbeck is 100% asian…Singaporean. His last name changed.
@Anonymous the asians are all in SEAS. no phi beta kappa there, just general awesomeness
@CC13JJ11 that’s assuming that people with western sounding last names can’t be asian #jhood
@Anonymous Let’s play a game of spot the Asian with the white name! First one to get it will be a Spring PBK inductee…
@CC13JJ11 i already told y’all it’s #jhood and that’s that
@Republican Why are there no asians? Or only one, I mean?

@Anonymous Congratulations, Sam!
@Beth Congratulations, Fred! Proud of you and this great accomplishment.
@Cody Hi Beth!!!!
@Anonymous It’s several factors, including GPA, PBK alumni professor recommendation (anonymous), extra-curricular, course-load difficulty etc
@Anonymous Congrats to all of you!! What an amazing accomplishment!
@Anonymous Are these people with the highest GPA or are there extra criteria?
@Anonymous In principle there are extra criteria, but in practice GPA is the dominant factor.
@Anonymous Congratulations! What an honor!
