Today is Giving Day here at Columbia, which is an online fundraising competition between the many schools that make up the university (and apparently “Athletics” is its own school?). Notably, the money donated to each school’s fund can only be used for that school–the money isn’t part of general funds. Check out the Leader Board to see which schools are raking in the most dough. As of now, Columbia College is leading in amount donated, with Athletics and SEAS trailing behind in second and third respectively, and GS is in the lead for greatest alumni participation percentage.

@troll in the dungeon athletes are the heart and soul of this university. but we’ve got a murmur and work for wall street. at least i can rely on athletics to do one thing consistently. no not win, i mean fill out the bottom end of the curve.
@never forget... the greatness that is and was columbia football. not saying this is representative of all the players or athletes on this campus in general. but to my knowledge nothing was done to remove the athletes involved, so we should remember who our money is going towards…

@Athletics is its own school... … but at least it’s not the ENTIRE school, like some colleges (“Home of the Fightin’ Illiterates!”)
@Which college is that? Which college is that? Home of the fightin’ illiterates? Chad Washington? The football player from Columbia College who had to degrade himself by harassing women because he could not get them the proper way and then got arrested, put in cuffs?
@erm... I hate to say this, but… oh, screw it, I’m just saying it: That you can’t tell the difference between the Chad Washington affair and a post about the the play-like-pro, read-like-a-fifth-grader problems a load of NCAA athletes have qualifies you for a Fightin’ Illterates jersey. What size do you take?
@actual athlete @Anonymous & @True I am sorry but you are incredibly misinformed. I don’t know if you were just pulling these assumptions out of your ass or some other idiot is telling you this bullshit, but the fees for athletics are for the free shirts given out at events, tickets for games, promotional programs like LionPoints and a membership to Dodge Fitness Center. The reason you just show your id to get into games is because YOU ALREADY PAID. You can get all of your money back if you get some school spirit and support your athletes instead of ragging on them. For your information the reason I get ‘free’ shirts is because I am required to wear athletic gear while training in Columbia Facilities and it would be absolutely disgusting to wear the same sweat-stained shirt for every workout over four years. Also you act like we are just prancing around in our gear like we love going straight from practice to class. Finally, realize that Giving Day is very important for Athletics and provides money for teams that Athletics would otherwise be unable to fund.
@Anonymous Wouldn’t that fee also cover the use of Dodge for all students?
@Anonymous did you know that every student pays in their tuition over $200 for an athletics fee?!? That’s right, you are paying for all their free shirts
@true.. And it also goes to their equipment, their travel costs, regular facility maintenance, improvement, and new construction, as well as many other necessary resources.
So no, it does not only go to their apparel, but thanks for assuming.
@anon The athletics fee is the right to use dodge whenever you would like. Believe it or not it costs money to run a gym, and the 200 dollars a semester or year you pay for it goes towards that operation.
Just to put it in perspective, a normal gym membership in the city costs anywhere from 50-100 bucks per month. You are getting a full fledged gym (i know the gym needs a lot of work but that is slated to be done in a year so moot point) plus free yoga, karate, etc… classes.
In terms of how varsity teams pay for their apparel and other things, it’s through fundraising. And this isn’t to say most of it is fundraised…literally ALL of a team’s budget is raised through alumni donations.
So rest assured your money isn’t going to those evil, horrible, nasty, parasitic athletes…lord knows we aren’t just normal students who like to play sports too
