At 6 pm this evening, Barnard College held a event doubly honoring the end of its 125th academic year and revealing the design plans for the new library, to be called the Teaching and Learning Center. Major construction is to begin Winter 2015 and some of Lehman’s offices and books are already starting their move over the summer into a “swing space” to be housed in LeFrak Gym.
The new center is set to offer a wide array of new amenities, like another cafe (besides Liz’s) and a connection to Altschul Hall that will provide for more laboratory space. For more information, refer to the TLC’s own site within Barnard to see its construction timeline, architectural setup, and more.

@Alum There aren’t any gaps between the new building and either Barnard Hall or Altschul. That will take some getting used to.
@sucks for class of 2017. we get to go through the whole building process and won’t even be there when it opens
@Anonymous cry me a river. for class of ’09, mac closed end of first-year and the diana didn’t open until after we graduated.
@Anonymous So the whole purpose of tearing down the old thing and making a new one is space… and yet other than the addition of that tower it doesn’t look that much bigger?
@Anonymous What is the rationale behind not building it to be very tall, given Barnard’s tight space constraints?
@Anonymous a lot of people on Claremont ave (CU faculty) were not happy with a building as tall as Altschul blocking the sun/view – I’m guessing that’s why the tower is only partial
@Anonymous Once again old white men from Columbia ruin things for Barnard.
Half those people pay almost nothing for their housing.
