Argentina gets it.
Happening in the world: A one-time tax on the wealthiest of Argentina comes into effect today with the profits intended to go toward COVID-19 relief efforts. The tax, applied only to those with assets of more than $2.3 million USD, will apply to roughly 12,000 people and seeks to raise around $3 billion. The measure was introduced by President Alberto Fernández and was passed by the Senate in December. It has received both harsh criticism and high praise, with the opposition deriding it as “confiscatory” and Oxfam celebrating it as the first step towards an equitable recovery from COVID-19. (BBC)
Happening in the US: UC Davis is standing out among the crowd of universities conducting mass testing programs this academic year by expanding those eligible to receive free COVID-19 testing from faculty and staff to the entire population of Davis, California, including workers who only commute to the city. Roughly half of the population has taken advantage of the free screening at least once since its inception, and the program has stopped over 850 potential outbreaks by asymptomatic individuals in the city since its launch. Happening in NYC: Weddings are back on in March, Governor Andrew Cuomo says, following an announcement that limited indoor dining would be allowed in New York City beginning on Valentine’s Day. The governor cited data that suggests a continued downward trend in test positivity rates in the city and across the state as the rationale for this anticipated loosening of restrictions. The rise of new and more contagious variants, however, could reverse those trends and force Cuomo to stay with these heightened restrictions. (Gothamist)
