Happening in the World: The Metropolitan Police, London’s police force, decided they would not take any action against Prince Andrew after reviewing sexual assault claims. Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre, who claims the Duke performed sexual acts without her consent and while she was a minor. Giuffre is still pursuing a lawsuit against Prince Andrew in the US (BBC).
Happening in the US: Merck, the pharmaceutical company, submitted an application to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval of its antiviral pill that can treat COVID-19. The pill, also known as molnupiravir, would allow for a much easier way to treat COVID-19 than the current monoclonal antibody treatments. If approved, the pills will be distributed to Americans the same way the vaccine was: the federal government will allocate amounts of pills to states which will distribute the pills to people as they see fit (NYT).
Happening in NYC: Rikers Island, New York City’s main jail complex, has seen a major rise in violence in the last few months. Recently, staffing shortages have led to some detainees almost taking total control of some buildings and entering off-limit spaces. Some detainees have freed different prisoners and then committed stabbings or other acts of violence against other detainees (NYT).
