If you’re looking for new, undiscovered, songs, this is the place to go.

There’s a fundamental paradox in obscure songs: namely, that by encouraging you all to listen to them, they won’t be obscure any longer, and the title of this playlist falls into inaccuracy. But we here at Bwog are excited enough about these songs to risk that, and to hope that you, dear reader, find something new among the tunes collected here.

Some common questions we anticipate:

What makes a song obscure? Well, there’s no clear delineation between “obscure” and “popular”—the spectrum is continuous rather than discrete, and different types of songs will find different audiences. But we needed a metric to make this playlist, and so each of these are songs with less than 100,000 plays across all platforms. It’s not the only metric, but it’s certainly the easiest to measure.

Are there genre considerations? Nope! Some may be overrepresented due to the type of songs that no one listens to fall into this category, but no songs here were curated by genre.

Why should we listen to obscure songs instead of the familiar ones we know and love? There’s always the chance of something new, and, of course, there’s the bragging rights on campus: that you are so cultured and hip you listen to bands your friends have never heard of.
