Editor’s Warning: Mentions of gun violence

Happening in the World: Novak Djokovic beat Marin Cilic in the Davis Cup semifinals, making this his 19th consecutive singles victory for the tournament! The Serb and his partner, however, could not win their doubles match. Instead, Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic will advance to the finals. They are certainly a pair to watch as the 2021 winners of both Wimbledon and the Olympics. In today’s other semifinals, Russia’s Medvedev and Rublev will face off against Germany (BBC).

Happening in the US: James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the teen accused of killing four students at a high school in Michigan, were caught early Saturday morning. They were found at a Detroit commercial building that houses artwork and appeared to be in hiding, despite the Crumbley’s attorney insisting the pair left town “for their own safety.” This comes hours after a prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against them for failing to intervene on the day of the shooting that tragically killed four and injured seven (NPR).

Happening in NYC: There are at least five cases of the Omicron variant in New York. An elderly woman from Suffolk County, whose vaccination status is unclear, is one. Two others are from Queens. A third is from Brooklyn. Dr. Celine Gounder, a NYU infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist, is concerned. She says that natural immunity is not enough and that people need to get vaccinated, now more than ever. She worries about hospital capacity and the return to normal society with this new strain of the Coronavirus (Gothamist).

Happening in Our Community: The Residence Hall Leadership Organization is hosting a Holiday Market from 1 to 4 pm today. Students will have the opportunity to meet new people and make their own ornaments and snow globes. If interested in some fun, head over to John Jay lounge!
