Love is in the air today in Ottawa—wait, no, it’s just COVID-19.
Happening in the World: The week-long “Freedom Convoy” protest in Ottawa came to an end Sunday night. Armed police cleared the blockade of the Windsor, Ontario, bridge crossing after six days of trucker-led protest. Canadian police made 12 arrests, but the majority of protestors left the blockade willingly. The Convoy began as a statement against a mandate which required all truckers crossing the US-Canada border to be vaccinated against COVID-19. (BBC)
Happening in the US: The Los Angeles Rams came out victorious over the Cincinnati Bengals in last night’s Super Bowl 56. With only one minute and 25 seconds left on the clock, the Rams’s Cooper Kupp scored his second touchdown of the game, bringing the score to a decisive 23–20. The touchdown brought the Rams their second NFL title. (BBC)
Happening in NYC: Police will soon begin randomly checking interstate bus travelers’ luggage for guns upon entry into the Port Authority. It is unclear what role the NYPD will play in the Port-Authority-Police-led searches. The checks take aim at the flow of firearms into New York City from the South, where restrictions surrounding their purchase are less strict. Members of the New York Civil Liberties Union have raised legal concerns about the plan, voicing skepticism about its constitutionality. (Gothamist)
