With a convenient location and the social aspects of suite living, can you overlook the maintenance issues? Only you can decide that.
Location: 600 West 113th Street
Nearby Dorms: Carman, Hogan, Broadway, Watt, and McBain.
Nearby Stores and Restaurants: Wu + Nussbaum, Dos Toros, Milano, Community Food & Juice, Junzi, Blue Bottle Cafe, International, Hex and Co, and University Housewares.
Cost: See Upperclass Rates.
Amenities:
- Bathrooms: You’ll have to closely look at floor plans depending on the suite as some suites have wonky bathroom layouts. B and C suites typically have two single-use bathrooms, D suite has one single-use bathroom, and A suites have three bathrooms—one with a shower and three sinks, one with two showers, and one with toilets. Some doubles and singles have their own private bathrooms as well.
- AC/Heating: No AC, but you can open a window. Heating will keep you toasty throughout the winter.
- Kitchen/Lounge: Each suite has its own kitchen. There is one 100 sq ft lounge per floor, but only 2/4 suites per floor have access to it. There is no building lounge.
- Laundry: Laundry in the basement is free, but it’s Columbia Housing, so get ready to wait for a dryer.
- Computers/Printers: There is a Paw Print station in the lobby for all your printing needs.
- Gym: Nope.
- Intra-transportation: Two elevators and a set of stairs. If you live on a top floor, you’ll have to spend about three to five minutes getting downstairs if you leave just before class starts. Furthermore, there are no stairs to the basement, so you’ll have to use the elevator to do laundry.
- Hardwood/Carpet: Once you go hardwood, you’ll never go back.
- WiFi: It’s there.
- Room Variety: 45 singles; 73 doubles; six residential floors.
- Cleaning Schedule: Bathrooms and kitchens cleaned twice every week. Trash and recycling bins next to the elevator on each floor are emptied regularly.
- Bonus: Nuss has some of the kindest security guards on campus! The building is in a great location, and the showers also have amazing water pressure.
Bwog Recommendation:
- “Nuss is conveniently located, and generally has good vibes. The suite setup is nice because you get a kitchen, but some suites don’t have lounges which sucks. Pro tip: If you have a group of 4, some of the doubles in the A suites are adjoined by a door and a bathroom, so you basically get a mini suite within the suite with a *private bathroom*, which is very clutch. As a junior with a bad lottery number, Nuss wasn’t first choice, but between a nice Nuss double and some shitty single, I’m glad I went with the double.”
- “I have mixed feelings about Nuss. For one thing, my particular suite is very social and I love the folks on my floor. It’s also a nice kitchen set-up and you have proximity to campus and the 1 train. The main downside for me is how often things break in the building and how long it takes to fix them. In the past six months living on Floor 5, I’ve seen gas leaks, regular leaks, mold, boiling water flooding our kitchen, my lighting fixture crashing to the floor, and more. The super is very nice, but repairs run behind schedule if they are not life-or-death.”
Resident Opinions:
- “Meh. It’s a good midtier dorm. There’s always something going wrong to keep you entertained.”
- “It’s falling apart but that gives it personality. Also has great singles with personal bathrooms.”
- “Someone forgot to update the floorplans about 5 years ago and just decided that never is better than late. So all the rooms are actually very strangely shaped, but it’s decent housing.”
