The committee took to Instagram Friday evening to address the hosting of the annual concert during the month of Ramadan.
The Executive Board of Bacchanal made an announcement via Instagram this evening that the date for its yearly undergraduate concert was selected by University administrators with “no input” from Bacchanal E-Board members. The concert is slated to take place on April 2, which is the first full day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The full text of the E-Board’s message can be found below.
The announcement, which includes an apology for the committee’s conduct, comes after vocal complaints from the student body regarding the scheduling of the concert, including an op-ed written by members of the Muslim Students Association and published by The Columbia Daily Spectator.
The E-Board claims to have brought the issue of the concert’s occurrence during Ramadan to the attention of its faculty advisors, who allegedly told them not to respond to any complaints about the matter. This policy is corroborated by the authors of the op-ed, who report that a request to the E-Board for accommodations for students observing Ramadan went unaddressed for three weeks.
In the message, the E-Board says it is co-sponsoring an Iftar meal with Columbia Muslim Life and implores students to contact the Bacchanal committee’s faculty advisor “for tangible change in the way Columbia operates.” The date of the concert remains unchanged.
Ramadan began on the evening of April 1 and will last until the evening of May 1.

@Don't remember anyone complaining when I was at CU Has this been a problem in previous years?
@Anonymous No. Students just like to complain. Everything is racist.
@Student Ramadan is an entire month holiday, not one day. Not even remotely reasonable to be unable to hold a spring concert basically during most of the spring semester. When would they propose to hold it, during spring break or finals week?
@Anonymous the significant issue here is that Bacchanal is being held on the first day of Ramadan, not that it takes place during Ramadan.
