Happening in the World: In Afghanistan, at least 157 people have died due to this year’s extreme winter conditions. The temperature reached a minimum of -18° F and has also resulted in the deaths of thousands of livestock. Additionally, the Taliban’s ban on women aid workers resulted in several organizations suspending their aid programs, which has further exacerbated the crisis. (CNN)

Happening in the US: A multi-day storm resulted in several tornadoes in Texas and Louisiana. The tornadoes have caused extensive damage to infrastructure in both states, leaving thousands without electricity and destroying homes. The storm is also expected to impact some regions in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. (CNN)

Happening in NYC: A former Columbia University gynecologist was convicted of sex trafficking in federal court. Robert Hadden, who previously worked at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, was accused of exploiting his position as a healthcare provider to sexually abuse women. This federal conviction focused on how Hadden lured women across state lines to his practice in order to exploit them, and follows prior state charges where Hadden avoided prison time although he plead guilty to the crime. Happening in Our Community: Attend a talk by Ayah Nuriddin at 6 pm in 513 Fayerweather Hall entitled “Black Eugenics and the Struggle for Equality.” Nuriddin, a Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University, will discuss how African-Americans in the 20th Century responded to scientific racism in broader eugenics, specifically through the use of Black eugenics.
