The singing truly never gets any better.

Happening in the World: An unmanned space capsule has been sent from Kazakhstan to assist in the return of three astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) after their initial return vehicle suffered damage from a small meteoroid. The capsule is set to dock at the ISS on Sunday, but the three astronauts are not expected to return until September. (BBC)

Happening in the US: The White House is pressing congressional Republicans to increase fines on rail companies for safety violations, following a train derailment in Ohio that caused health and safety worries in East Palestine after chemicals were released from dozens of derailed train cars operated by Norfolk Southern. The Biden-Harris administration is urging Republicans to work with them to reinstate safety measures, and legislation to increase fines, as the maximum fine for hazardous material transportation violations is only $225,455—less than 1% of Norfolk Southern’s profits in 2022. Happening in NYC: New York State saw a significant increase of 21% in taxpayers who earned at least $1 million in 2021, despite the fact that millionaires fled the state at a higher rate than the general population, according to recently released tax data. The state collected $67.2 billion in income taxes in 2021, and the top 50% of earners accounted for virtually all of it. Governor Kathy Hochul is proposing a three-year extension of a higher tax rate on corporations with at least $5 million in annual revenue, but some legislative Democrats want to go further by boosting the corporate tax, increasing personal income taxes on the wealthy, and taxing things like valuable inheritances.
