Happening in the World: Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s chief advisor from 2020 will testify today against Johnson at Britain’s public inquiry into the COVID-19 pandemic. Dominic Cummings, who served as Johnson’s advisor at the beginning of 2020, has accused Johnson of being unfit for office during the pandemic. Cummings follows in the path of other aides who have also testified against Johnson’s handling of the pandemic. (AP)

Happening in the US: Thousands of people are evacuating the Southern California town of Aguanga due to a wildfire that has burned over 1,200 acres so far. Almost 4,000 people and 1,139 homes have been affected by evacuation orders. As of this morning, the fire is 0% contained. (New York Times)

Happening in NYC: MTA has implemented six OMNY vending machines in certain subway stations. The vending machines enable those who would like to pay with cash or don’t have a tap-to-pay card or phone to load cash onto a plastic OMNY card for the price of $1. This is MTA’s newest step towards phasing out the MetroCard, which, according to NYC Transit President Richard Davey, will still be in use for at least another 18 months. RIP MetroCard. (Gothamist)

Happening in Our Community: Columbia University is hosting an applied mathematics colloquium with Jiequn Han of the Flatiron Institute from 2:45 to 3:45 pm in Mudd Hall. The colloquium will discuss new approaches to partial differential equations. More information here.
