Happening in the World: Ecuador, once known for its stability in a tumultuous region, has been grappling with a surge in violent criminal activity that has upended daily life for its citizens. The increase in violence is largely attributed to narco gangs seeking new smuggling routes in countries with less vigilant authorities.The nation of 18 million people has witnessed dismembered limbs on its streets, prison gang warfare, and school closures due to ongoing bloodshed. Happening in the US: While President Biden has been supportive of Israel, he cautioned Israel against a full-scale occupation of Gaza, stating that it would be “a big mistake”. He stated that Hamas and its extremist elements do not represent all Palestinians. Although he didn’t explicitly mention sending ground forces into Gaza, he endorsed the goal of dismantling Hamas. Biden called for the elimination of Hamas while advocating for the creation of a path to a Palestinian state. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: Staten Island’s Freshkills, once the world’s largest landfill, has been transformed into what will become one of the largest parks in New York City. The first 21-acre section of the North Park was recently opened, featuring walking and biking lanes, a lookout deck, and access to the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge.The entire Freshkills park project, spanning 2,200 acres and almost three times the size of Central Park, is expected to be completed by 2036. (Gothamist)
