Did someone say new subways?
Happening in the World: In Thailand, a rather curious happening was spotted in the streets of Pattaya: a pet lion going on a joyride in the back of a luxurious open-top Bentley. While it is technically legal to have this feline as a pet in the country, the owner was arrested as the original owner didn’t have his facility checked before the transfer, making the ownership ultimately illegal (BBC).
Happening in the US: Republicans in the Wisconsin state Assembly are preparing to pass a bill that would ban abortion after 14 weeks statewide. Current state law prohibits abortion after 20 weeks. The referendum will be voted on in April, and if approved, the law will go into effect the day after the election. (AP)
Happening in NYC: New subway cars will feature “open gangway” accordion-style connectors that allow passengers to move between cars. An internal MTA memo states that these cars will only be allowed to run on the slow track. Although they were originally intended to serve several express lines, the design conflicts with MTA regulations which require operators to inspect both sides of the tracks in the case that emergency brakes are activated. The open gangway makes it impossible for inspectors to climb in between cars. (The Gothamist)
