Happening in the World: Nearly half a million homes are left without power in Victoria, Australia after torrential rain and strong winds knocked out parts of the network. The weather hampered efforts to fight the massive bushfires in the west of Victoria and public transport has been halted due to multiple reports of storm damage. Last winter was Australia’s warmest since the beginning of their records. (BBC)

Happening in the US: In a closely watched special House election in New York on Tuesday, Democrat Tom Suozzi flipped George Santos’ House of Representatives seat. This victory in the Queens and Long Island district halted the trend that had Republicans capture almost every major election on Long Island since 2021. With 85 percent of the votes counted, Souzzi had won 54 percent of the vote as opposed to his opponent, Maxi Pilip with 46 percent. Souzzi pushed a moderate approach emphasizing heightened border security. (New York Times)

Happening in NYC: Tuesday’s snowstorm canceled hundreds of flights at airports in the New York City area. LaGuardia canceled more than 35% of its flights, Newark canceled 20%, and John F. Kennedy canceled 15%. The Federal Aviation Administration recommended passengers to check the status of their flights before going to the airports. (Gothamist)
