Happening in the World: A continual draught has caused water levels in the Amazon basin to hit record lows. The Madeira river in Porto Velho, Brazil and the Solimões river in Tabatinga, Brazil are among the most severe cases of falling water levels. Although the region is in its dry season, during which there is less rainfall and higher temperatures, the current draught is unusually severe and persistent. Low water levels are impacting the lives of local populations, who rely on the rivers for fishing and drinking water. (BBC)

Residents near vacant lots have filed complaints throughout the past year. The lots, filled with trash and overgrowth, cause increased numbers of mosquitoes. (Gothamist)
