Happening in the World: In India, 1.5 million people are being evacuated due to a cyclone that is approaching the eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal. The cyclone, called Cyclone Dana, is expected to make landfall by October 25. The cyclone is also expected to hit coastal areas with wind speeds of up to 74 mph. Schools and airports have been closed as rescue teams remain on high alert as the storm approaches. (BBC)
Happening in the US: In over 10 US states, there has been an outbreak of the bacterial infection, Escherichia coli, linked to McDonald’s “Quarter Pounder” burger. The bacteria may have contaminated the raw onions that are used on the burgers. As of October 22, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that at least 49 people have been sickened and one person has died. (NBC)
Happening in NYC: On Thursday, October 24, there will be a ticker tape parade to celebrate the New York Lady Liberty’s WNBA Championship win. This will be the first ticker tape parade since 2012 when the football team, The New York Giants, defeated The New England Patriots in Super Bowl 46. The Downtown Alliance has announced that those commuting into lower Manhattan on Thursday may experience road closures and detours. (ABC7)
Happening in Our Community: On Thursday, October 24, Columbia University will celebrate “Roar and Explore: Fall Festival” on the South Lawn. The event will take place in the early afternoon and be the last day of the “Roar and Explore” festival on the Morningside campus. There will be stress busters, refreshments, snacks, games, spaces to hang out with others and other activities. (Columbia University Events)
