Dear Bwog,

My friend ghosted me. A not-too-close friend, but still. TLDR: I found out he mentioned something to our friend about how “ego-driven I am.” I really enjoyed having a gym buddy, and he supported me as I created my fitness Instagram account (that’s actually doing well!). But now I feel like I’ve lost a bit of interest since my friend ghosted me after we started lifting. How do I cope with losing a friend, or asking him why he did that? How can I make new ones not already in our circle?

From,

Friend-Needing Fighter

Dear Friend-Needing Fighter,

We’ll start with the obvious: if you’re fully disinterested in putting in effort to maintain what seems like just a friendly acquaintance-ship after this immature display of poor communication, that’s pretty understandable. However, from your note, it sounds like your time together at the gym may have been the main point of contention in this relationship. There’s no reason to completely let this friendship drop out of your life if you still enjoy it! Inviting him out for a meal or a walk may be a more productive way to build your connection in a way that may not make him feel competitive. Plus, if you still want to lift with someone, judging from the number of machines left open in Dodge at every hour (usually zero!) there are plenty of new gym buddies around to meet!

Love, Bwog
