Roommate concerns? AskBwog has your back.

“Dear Bwog,

I want to do the room swap because me and my roommate are just not vibing in my opinion but she really likes me as her roommate. How do I tell her I want to do the room swap?

Love, Nervous Swapper”

Dear Nervous Swapper,

It can be hard to get some space from anyone you’re living with in such close proximity. Try starting the conversation gently, communicating how you’re feeling—talking about your boundaries in a kind and considerate way can help you create a more honest and relaxing environment. You may not even need a room swap, but if this isn’t a big enough step, a little white lie won’t hurt. Just like we tell our friends we have a lot of homework so we can spend the night in bed watching Gilmore Girls for three hours, a room swap doesn’t have to mean the end of a good relationship: you won’t be faulted for telling her you need a cleaner/quieter space to live in. It is your house for the next seven months, after all.

Love, Bwog
