Happening in the World: In Ecuador, at least 15 people have been killed and 14 more were injured in a fight that occurred in a prison. The fight occurred on Tuesday, November 12 at the El Litoral jail in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The prison has had previous violent gang violence and the prison houses members of some of the most violent gangs. The details of those killed have not been released and an investigation into the cause of the fight is underway. (BBC)
Happening in the US: In central California, a powerful dust storm called a haboob, caused a vehicle pileup on a highway. Haboobs are dust storms that tend to be carried by the wind of a weather front from flat, arid areas. The large cloud reduced visibility which caused 20 cars to crash into each other in Madera County. Several people in the crash were hospitalized with minor injuries. The exact number of people hospitalized with injuries is still unknown. (AP)
Happening in NYC: In Chelsea Manhattan, Housing Works’ flagship store is starting the event, “Fashion For Action,” which helps support low-income New Yorkers. During the four day shopping event, top designers and brand stores donate products that you can buy at a high discount. The products are new and some are up to 80% off the retail price. Some of the products donated from designers and stores include coats, dresses, candles, and cashmere. There are also items online that customers can buy if they are unable to go to Chelsea. (ABC7)
Happening in Our Community: On Thursday, November 14, The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment will host an event entitled, “Remaking Global Trade for a Sustainable Future – A Talk by Dan Esty.” The event will feature Dan Esty, the Hillhouse professor of Yale University who has authored 14 books and numerous articles on climate change. Esty will discuss the need for a global response to climate change and the goods and services required for a green transition. Registration is required and lunch will be provided.
