The plea of a tired Bwogger who just wants to find an empty chair!
As someone who (unfortunately) regularly spends upwards of 6 hours straight in Butler, I see all that happens within its hallowed halls. People sit down, people stand up, new people sit down, and through it all I am still trying to write one single paper.
However, I have begun to notice a phenomenon that irks me. Whenever I walk into a study room in Butler, a noticeable portion of the chairs are taken up by backpacks or haphazardly arranged coats, scarves, and computers. In the main reading room, at least 1 out of 8 chairs at each table are usually “claimed” in this way even though nobody is actually sitting there. This makes finding a spot to get your work done exceedingly difficult. As finals period approaches, this problem is getting even worse, so I have a plea for my fellow students:
I understand that people have bathroom breaks and need to go outside to touch grass for a moment before returning to the brain-numbing monolith that is Butler. However, it’s extremely unlikely that THIS many people all had to pee at the same time.
Multiple times I have sat next to people who have left their things for HOURS at a time. One time a guy dumped his things in the empty chair next to me, only to come back three hours later, pick his stuff up and leave! I’ve even heard of people leaving their stuff overnight. Do you people have no shame?? I’m half-inclined to just move people’s stuff, but I won’t because I’m considerate (unlike some of you).
I understand that most of these people leave their stuff because of how difficult it is to find a seat in Butler, but they are only making the problem worse. In my opinion, it’s rude to take up space that you aren’t even using when another Barnumbian struggling through finals could be using that space to actually be productive.
All I ask is that if you know you’re leaving for longer than an hour, take your stuff with you! You’ll be able to find another spot somewhere else when you get back. In the meantime, someone else (i.e. me) can use that space to cram for their final the next morning.
