A rare winter storm is affecting parts of the South Atlantic region.
Happening in the World: Mittens, an eight-year-old Maine Coon cat, flew for 24 hours after being forgotten in an Air New Zealand aircraft. The cat’s owner, Margo Neas, was informed at the Melbourne Airport that the plane Mittens was located in had taken off for New Zealand before the cat had been removed from the cargo hold. Mittens was flown back to Melbourne and reunited with Neas, for whom the airport reimbursed all travel costs. (BBC)
Happening in the US: A rare winter storm has moved east from Texas and is now hitting parts of the Florida Panhandle, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The storm has affected residents and transportation in the effected areas, with the Jacksonville International Airport being forced to close on Tuesday evening. The storm has caused up to eight inches of snow, below-freezing temperatures, and heavy snow in some areas. (AP)
