Happening in the World: Switzerland is seeking to ban international adoptions. This is due to potential child abuse occurring during the adoption process. A proposal for the ban will be drawn up by the government by the end of next year. Possible exceptions to the ban may be granted for intrafamily adoptions when a family member/step-parent adopts a child. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: Yesterday, a plan was approved for Oklahoma public schools to ask for proof of citizenship when enrolling. Although non-citizens would not be prevented from enrolling, a practice ruled unconstitutional in 1982, districts would have to track and report the number of students who do not provide proof of citizenship. It is not yet clear whether Oklahoma’s over 500 districts will comply with the rule. (NYTimes)
Happening in NYC: New York state is unable to process Medicaid payments due to the Trump Administration freeze on federal spending, and NY Attorney General Letitia James has joined a lawsuit to reverse the directive. New York receives over $55 billion a year, which provides healthcare for nearly 7 million people. (Gothamist)
